L’ALBUFERA NATURE PARK

General view

Audioguide

The natural region of Lake L’Albufera and its surroundings was declared a Natural Park in 1986.
This 21,000-hectare area is shared between thirteen different municipalities: Valencia, Alfafar, Catarroja, Silla, Sueca, Sollana, Massanassa, Sedaví, Albal, Albalat de la Ribera, Cullera, Beniparrell and Algemesí.

There are three distinct areas from an environmental point of view:
- Lake Albufera
- El Marjal, which is mostly occupied by rice paddies.
- The sandbar that separates the Lake from the sea.

The sandbar, which is 30 km long and 1 km wide, is almost entirely urbanised. Only one part of this sandbar, which is known as the Devesa de l’Albufera, currently maintains a well-preserved dune system.

Within the 10km by 1 km space of the Devesa de l’Albufera that stretches between the sea and the land, we can see four distinct ecosystems:
- The beach
- Mobile dunes or first cordon dunes
- Interdune hallows
- Fixed dunes or second cordon dunes, which are commonly known as "la pinada".
